Grants – What Are They and How Do I Get One?
Most of us have heard of the term ‘grant’ and may have even applied for one or two grants in our lives, but what exactly is a grant? A grant is an award of funds from a government or private organization to support a specific project or activity. In some cases, the recipient is required to repay the grant with interest, so it is actually a loan. The purpose of a grant is to promote the development of the community by encouraging and supporting local businesses, non-profit organizations and individuals to improve their quality of life. There are many different types of grants available, depending on the area of need. For example, there are grants for arts and culture, education, economic development, health, environmental protection, housing, transportation, public safety, research and technology, energy, and more.
Why would someone want to get a grant?
There are several reasons why you might want to get a grant. If you are starting a business, you may be eligible for a grant that will help you expand your operations, purchase equipment, hire staff, or buy inventory. You could also receive a grant to start a new program or to develop a new product or service. If you are trying to improve the community, you may qualify for a grant to renovate an old building or to install playground equipment in a park. If you want to help others less fortunate than yourself, you may qualify for a free grant to help build a house for a family in need.
How do I apply for a grant?
In most cases, you will have to submit an application form to the appropriate agency. Some agencies require that you complete an application form and send it to them by mail. Other agencies require that you complete an online application form and submit it directly to them. Once you submit your application, you may have to wait several weeks to hear back from the agency. If you are awarded a grant, the funds will usually be disbursed within 30 days after the grant is approved. You should expect to pay a small fee to cover administrative costs associated with processing your application.
What if I am not successful?
If you are unsuccessful in your attempt to obtain a grant, don’t despair. You can still benefit from a grant by using the money to start your own business, provide services to your community, or improve your home. In fact, many people use grants as seed money to launch a new business, and then continue to use the proceeds from the business to apply for additional grants. It’s a win-win situation!
